Description

Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) has a rich history dating back thousands of years, making it one of the oldest known cultivated herbs. Revered by ancient civilizations like the Greeks and Romans as a nourishing green and medicinal herb, this little green wonder has made it’s way around the world. It’s known for its succulent leaves and stems, and in recent years, Purslane has experienced a resurgence in popularity due to its many health benefits and adaptability to various climates, including Georgia’s Climate Diversity.

Purslane, also known as the “omega-3 powerhouse,” boasts a myriad of health benefits that make it a prized addition to any diet. One of its most exceptional attributes is its incredibly high content of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Omega-3s are essential for supporting cardiovascular health, reducing inflammation, and promoting brain function. Additionally, the presence of vitamins A, C, and E in purslane contributes to its antioxidant properties, helping to combat oxidative stress and bolster the immune system. Its abundant minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium further enhance its nutritional profile, making purslane a remarkable green that not only tantalizes the taste buds but also nourishes the body from the inside out.

Grow Purslane in the Georgia Garden for most of the year! Purslane is not frost tolerant, so it can be grown anytime there isn’t a threat of freezing temperatures. We recommend growing Purslane throughout the Spring, Summer, and Fall. If you live in South or Coastal Georgia, depending on how early the first freeze comes, Purslane’s growing Season may stretch well into the Early Winter.

Purslane prefers temperatures that remain above 50 degrees. It is not frost tolerant and lower temperatures will slow the plant’s growth.

Expect plants to reach a height of 3″ and width of about 8″. Plants like to expand horizontally, so leave them with enough room to “crawl”. Prune flowers and buds from the plant to maximize flavor and leaf production!

Seed Pack contains 500+ Seeds.
