Description

Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum Majus) have a rich history dating back to the Incan Empire, where they were grown for their culinary and medicinal properties. Nasturtiums add a radiant glow to the Georgia Garden and attract pollinators.

How to Grow Nasturtiums in Georgia:

  • Soil: Nasturtiums thrive in well-drained, fertile soil. Before sowing the seeds, ensure the soil is loosened and free from rocks or debris.
  • Planting: Sow the seeds directly into the ground or in containers no deeper than 1 inch (we recommend 1/2 inch) and space them about 10 to 12 inches apart to provide ample room to spread.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the hot Georgia Summers. Be cautious not to overwater, as Nasturtiums prefer slightly drier conditions compared to other plants.
  • Sunlight: These sun-loving plants flourish in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

Best Time of Year to Start from Seed: In Georgia, it’s best to sow Nasturtium seeds after the last frost, typically from late March to early April. This gives them time to grow before the hot summer temperatures arrive. Nasturtiums are quite hardy and can tolerate a light frost, so they can also be planted in early fall for a second flowering season. Expect Plants to reach a height of 15″ to 22″.
