Southern Peas are a perfect fit for the Georgia Garden! Tolerant to the heat, but not tolerant to cold, Southern Peas make an excellent Late Spring/Summer/Early Fall Crop. We recommend planting Southern Peas in the Late Spring and Summer, then harvesting into the Fall. The key is growing them throughout the warmest and sunniest part of the year. Blackeye Peas, also known as Cow Peas, produce 5 to 8 inch long pea pods. They’re tolerant of Summer’s intense humidity and heat. Producing a robust harvest, these bush-peas are naturally resistant to many diseases.

Expect Southern Pea bushes to reach a height of 2 to 3 feet and a width of 1 to 2 feet. They produce 5 to 8 inch long pea pods.

Harvest: Properly harvesting pea pods is a simple task. If harvesting them to eat immediately (to cook), harvest as soon as peas have filled the little compartments in the pods. If harvesting to save the peas for later, it is important to let them dry. Allow the pods to turn brown and dry, this will allow the peas to dry and harden inside of the pod

Southern Peas, also known as Legumes, are a nitrogen-fixing plant. They naturally add nutrients back to the soil. Growing peas in the garden are an important part of naturally replenishing the Earth’s supply of nutrients.
