Black Seeded Simpson is a Butterhead type of Lettuce. It strikes the right balance between crisp and tender texture, a flavor that is refreshing and sweet, and appealing to the eye. Black Seeded Simpson is an old heirloom variety that thrives during Georgia’s Cold Season.
Lettuce has two growing seasons in Georgia. The Spring Season Crop, where Lettuce is started in Winter/Early Spring and harvested into the Late Spring and Early Summer. The Fall Season Crop, where Romaine Lettuce is started in Summer/Late Summer and harvested into the Early Winter.
Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce thrives between the temperatures of 35 degrees and 75 degrees. It is frost tolerant, surviving temperatures as low as 20 degrees. Lettuce can handle warm temperatures during the day (low to mid 80’s), as long as temperatures at night remain cooler.
