Description

Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum) have a flavor best described as the classic onion flavor of chives, infused with Garlic. Also known as Chinese Chives or Chinese Leeks, they belong to the onion family and boast a subtle garlic flavor, making them a delightful addition to a variety of dishes. Their slender, flat, dark green leaves are both aromatic and visually appealing, adding a touch of elegance to any garden or kitchen.

Garlic Chives are an easy to grow herb in the Georgia Garden! We recommend growing them in the ground and in containers! They’re an excellent candidate for both.

Tips for Growing Garlic Chives in Georgia:

  1. Seed Starting: For best results, start the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date in Georgia (and/or follow the recommended planting dates below). Use well-draining potting mix and plant the seeds ¼ inch deep in individual pots or seed trays.
  2. Transplanting: Once the seedlings are 4 to 6 inches tall and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors to your chosen garden location.
  3. Soil & Sun: Choose a sunny spot in your garden with fertile, loamy soil. Garlic Chives prefer a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH level of 6.0 to 7.0.
  4. Spacing: Space the transplants about 8 to 12 inches apart to give them ample room to grow.
  5. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot.
  6. Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to promote healthy growth.
  7. Harvesting: Garlic Chives can be harvested once the leaves reach a suitable size, usually around 60 to 90 days after planting. Snip the leaves close to the base, leaving the plant intact for regrowth.
