Description

Purple Top Turnips produce a 3 inch bulb that has a purple top and a white bottom. Turnips can be eaten stewed, mashed, or raw (shredded like slaw). Turnip Tops are also edible, they can be cooked like other leafy green vegetables.

Turnips have two growing seasons in Georgia. The Spring Season Crop, where Turnips are started in Winter/Early Spring and harvested into the Late Spring and Early Summer. The Fall Season Crop, where Turnips are started in Summer/Late Summer and harvested into the Early Winter.

Expect plants to reach a height of about 1 foot and a width of up to 2 feet. Harvest Turnip roots when the visible root top is bulging and the plant is 40 to 60 days old. When harvesting Turnips Greens, make sure not to harvest any more than 1/3 of the plant at one time. This will keep the plant stress-free, vibrant and vigorously growing. Turnips thrives between the temperatures of 40 degrees and 80 degrees. It is frost tolerant, surviving temperatures as low as 25 degrees.
