Description
Dill (Anethum graveolens) has been cherished by generations for its culinary and medicinal properties. Dill is the ideal Herb to grow in the Georgia Garden. Prized Ancient Civilizations for its delicious flavor and health benefits, this herb is just as dynamic as it is delicious. Dill was a popular subject in Greek mythology and has even been discovered among Ancient Egyptian Tombs. The herb’s popularity spread like wildfire throughout Europe and Asia, eventually making its way to Georgia, as a beloved flavor utilized in Southern Cuisine.
Grow Dill in the Georgia Garden for most of the year! Dill is not frost tolerant, so it can be grown anytime there isn’t a threat of dropping below freezing. In Georgia, the ideal time to start Dill from seed is as early as around March to April and as late as September to October. These months provide a perfect balance of warm temperatures and a reduced risk of frost, allowing Dill to grow into abundance. The Growing Season generally starts after the last frost of Spring, ending with the first hard frost of Winter (see our further recommendations below).
Dill prefers temperatures that remain above 40 degrees, sometimes surviving light/short freezes no colder than 25 degrees.
Expect plants to reach a height of 12″ to 24″. Prune flowers and buds from the plant to maximize flavor and leaf production!
